As I continue this review of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, I find myself really grasping the second half of Jesus’ statement about salt...
We just discussed the first part:
“You are the salt of the earth.” — Matthew 5:13
But then Jesus finished the same verse with a curious warning:
“But if salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?”
Which seems like such a strange thing to say.
After all, salt is salt.
How would it lose its flavor?
In Jesus’ day, salt was often mixed with other minerals and impurities.
Over time, the valuable part could be washed away, leaving behind something that looked like salt
but no longer functioned like it.
And I think that’s exactly His point.
It’s possible to look the part without fulfilling the purpose...
To use Christian language without Christian conviction.
To attend church without following Christ.
To know Scripture without obeying it.
The world doesn’t need more people who simply identify as Christians.
The world needs people whose lives reflect Christ.
People who forgive when it’s difficult,
tell the truth when it’s costly,
love their enemies when it’s uncomfortable.
Not perfectly—but with humility.
Because a compromised faith doesn’t just affect us.
It affects everyone around us—families, friends, coworkers,
even our witness to those we encounter.
So, perhaps that’s the question Jesus wants us to wrestle with today:
If someone examined my life closely,
would they see evidence of Christ’s transforming work?
Or would they simply see someone who appears 'religious'?
Something worth thinking about!
