God lives ... where?!

A remarkable theme throughout the Bible is watching where God chooses to dwell.

In the beginning, God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden.

Then, after Israel's rescue from Egypt, God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle—a sacred dwelling place among His people.

In Hebrew, the word often associated with this dwelling is mishkan, meaning a dwelling place or habitation.

Later, God's presence filled the Temple in Jerusalem.

Then something incredible happens.

John writes:

"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
— John 1:14

The word translated dwelt literally means "tabernacled."

In other words:

Jesus became the dwelling place of God among men.

The God who once filled the Tabernacle and Temple stepped onto the dirt of His creation.

But the story doesn't end there...

After Christ's resurrection and ascension, God did something even more astonishing.

He made His dwelling place the hearts of His people.

We see Paul write:

"Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?"
— 1 Corinthians 3:16

Think about that.

The same God whose glory filled Eden.

The same God whose presence filled the Tabernacle.

The same God whose glory filled the Temple.

The same God who took on flesh in Jesus Christ.

Now dwells within believers through the Holy Spirit.

Not because we've earned it.

Not because we're worthy.

But because Christ paid the fine for our sin
and made a way where there was none.

And I think that's one of the most beautiful threads woven throughout God's Word:

From Eden...

To the Tabernacle...

To the Temple...

To Christ...

To us.

The story of Scripture is, in many ways, the story of God drawing nearer and nearer to His people.

Praise be to God.
