Over the last several years, one of the greatest areas of study in my life has been Christian apologetics...

But just before that, I didn’t even know what that word meant.

In fact, I assumed it meant Christians apologizing for ... something ...and I couldn't tell you what, exactly?

Come to find out— it’s exactly the opposite.

The word comes from the Greek apologia, meaning a reasoned defense or explanation.

Simply put:

Apologetics is explaining why Christianity is true and giving reasons for the hope we have in Christ.

It is derived from 1 Peter 3:15: "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." ...
the Greek word translated "make a defense" is ἀπολογία (apologia).

While I sincerely believe the evidence matters.
And history matters.
Logical reasoning matters.
And ultimately, understanding the resurrection of Jesus is not a blind leap of faith.

But the most important lesson I’ve learned about apologetics is:

No argument will ever save a human soul.

The greatest evidence in the world means nothing if we never recognize our need for a Savior.

Because the Law of God acts
just like a mirror.

Not to clean us.

But to reveal what's broken inside.

“Through the law comes knowledge of sin.” — Romans 3:20

It shows us that we've all lied.

We've hated.

We've lusted.

We've broken God’s perfect standard.

It's a mirror that reveals our disease.
But it doesn't provide the cure.

A man cannot save himself.
A man that's died won't resurrect himself.
A person guilty of crime is unable to pay a debt of righteousness they do not possess.

And this is where the Gospel—
the good new of Jesus Christ
becomes the greatest news humanity will ever hear.

God, being rich in mercy, did what we could never do.

Jesus Christ lived the perfect life we failed to live.
(Therefore He had no need to pay for sins of His own...)

And He willingly stepped into our place and paid our infinite fine against a holy and perfectly just God—
on the cross.

Justice was satisfied.

Mercy was offered.

And Grace was poured out to all who will put their faith in Him.

Apologetics can answer the question,
"Is God real?"

The Law answers, "Why do I need Him?"
And the Gospel answers, "How can I be reconciled to Him?"

Praise be to God.
