The gospel of

Matthew

— Chapter 5 —
The sermon on the mount

As I continue studying the Sermon on the Mount, one thing has become abundantly clear:

Jesus isn’t merely concerned with what we do.

He’s concerned with who we are.

Most of us read the sixth commandment—

“You shall not murder.”

and we think:

“Well, at least I’ve never done that.”

But that's where Jesus Changes the Conversation...

“Everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment…” — Matthew 5:22

Suddenly, murder isn’t just about a knife.

It’s about a heart.

Because long before someone commits murder with their hands, they’ve often committed it in their heart.

Resentment. Bitterness. Hatred. Malice. Contempt.

A heart that has decided another person no longer deserves love, grace, or even dignity.

So, the heart is our real Battleground.

Once again, Jesus isn’t lowering God’s standard.

He’s revealing how deep it has always been.

The problem isn’t merely what our hands are capable of doing.

It’s what our hearts are capable of becoming.

And if we’re totally honest, we’ve all been exactly there.

Holding grudges.

Refusing to forgive.

Writing others off.

That’s Why We Need a Savior.

The Gospel isn’t about teaching bad people to behave better.

It’s about giving spiritually dead people new life.

A new heart.

One that’s being transformed to look more like Christ.

And praise God—
that’s exactly what Jesus came to do.
